December 2011 - 2nd Quarter

ANNOUNCEMENTS

NJHS is currently planning a bake sale for Friday, December 9th. All members and petitioners are asked to donate a baked item for the sale, and all items will be sold for 50 cents. The proceeds of our sale will go toward purchasing gifts for a family on St. Linus's Giving Tree, and we are actually hoping to make enough money to support one of the volunteers for the COR Teen Mission trip which is scheduled for next year.

Our four officers, Kathleen Sullivan, Andrea Horn, Kerry Mahoney, and Josie Delisi traveled to Marian Catholic High School and, along with our student council officers, attended a leadership conference which was attended by the student leaders of several schools in the area. Students have been attending this conference for the past few years and find it to be a worthwhile adventure.

The NJHS Peer Tutoring is up and running for the third straight year. All of the students who offer their time to tutor the students in the younger grades do a great job, and their efforts are very appreciated.

The money collected from our Halloween Dress-Down Day will be donated to the Oak Lawn Children's Library. We are also collecting plastic bottle caps for the same cause. Feel free to send any caps that you may have to school with your children, and we will see that they are delivered to the museum.

We have enjoyed our first NJHS PeeWee Luncheon, a quarterly activity initiated by the 8th grade officers in which students in grades K-8 are recognized by teachers and/or peers for exhibiting the qualities which are held in high regard by the National Junior Honor Society. Those pillars are as follows: character, citizenship, leadership, service, and scholarship. Congratulations to the students who were chosen, and good luck to all of you next quarter!

Permission slips for our field trip to the Chicago Wolves game will be sent home next week. It is a much anticipated field trip available to the 7th and 8th grade members of NJHS. Nachos and cotton candy...now that's a motivator to participate in NJHS!

Service hour sheets need to be turned in by Friday, April 20th, and remember that will be here before we know it

The NJHS Induction Ceremony will be held in May, and the date will be announced as soon as I know what it is!

Thank you to everyone for your support of all of our activities and fundraisers. The students earn such a sense of accomplishment when their endeavors are successful.

September 2011 - 1st Quarter

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The National Junior Honor Society has begun our year by electing four new officers. Kathleen Sullivan is our president, Andrea Horn is our vice-president, Kerry Mahoney is our secretary, and Josie Delisi is our treasurer. Congratulations to all of them! We have begun setting goals for ourselves and look forward to a successful year.

Twenty-nine students have petitioned for membership in NJHS, and I wish them the best of luck!

NJHS will have a taffy apple stand set up at Hawktoberfest, and proceeds from this sale will go directly back to St. Linus School. Please stop by and see us!

Our tutoring program will begin the week of October 10th. For those who may not be familiar with this program, NJHS members provide after-school tutoring twice a week. This service is available to all St. Linus students who may need a little help with reviewing the material that had been learned that day in class. The program is monitored by our librarian, Dee Conn, and students are referred by their classroom teacher.

NJHS service hours need to be completed by Friday, April 20th, and members and petitioners are required to perform twenty-four service hours (12 in-school and 12 out-of-school).

This year's NJHS field trip will be the ever-popular Chicago Wolves hockey game, so mark your calendars for January 11th. (The field trip is for members only. Petitioners need to wait until next year...)
