National Junior Honor Society - March News

Our NJHS Bake Sale was very successful (and delicious), and $425.00 was raised and forwarded to the American Red Cross relief effort in earthquake-damaged Haiti. Additionally, the St. Linus Men's Club generously added to our donation with a check for $500.00. Thank you to everyone who participated by baking, spending, and donating!

The National Junior Honor Society held a fundraiser in February in which all of the St. Linus students were able to "Wear Red", and the money donated for the dress-down day was donated to the American Heart Association. Almost $300.00 was raised through their efforts.

NJHS members and candidates should be wrapping up their service hours. If anyone is in need of finding additional hours, feel free to contact me, and I can find someone who will gladly put you to work!

CHRISTMAS COLLECTION

The National Junior Honor Society is organizing a Christmas Collection for the animals that are living at the Animal Welfare League in Chicago Ridge. During this time of year, the shelter is in need of old beach towels, bath towels, and blankets which are used to keep the cages warm during the winter months.

Our goal this Christmas was to provide a "giving" opportunity for the students that did not result in any shopping or expense on the part of their parents. And, most of the middle school students shared with me that their linen closets do have some items that are suitable for the purpose of lining cages. (We've got tons of towels with holes and bleach spots!)

NJHS TUTORING PROGRAM

Also, the students that have been participating in the NJHS tutoring program have been doing an incredible job, and Dr. Stritch has treated them to a pizza lunch. Thank you to everyone involved!

National Junior Honor Society - October News

The goals of students who participate in National Junior Honor Society are scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship, and all students, whether they are members or candidates, will strive to meet these goals which they have chosen to attain.

This year's National Junior Honor Society officers are Matt Sweiss, Mike Snooks, Tom Pappas, Brenna Donegan, and Catherine Quinn, and they have already been instrumental in developing the following activities:

*A tutoring/homework help program in which current members and candidates provide their services to students in need of academic help

*A Taffy Apple Sale in which the proceeds of the sale are being used to purchase candy bars that will be sent to troops in Afghanistan along with letters that have been written by the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

*A Halloween Dress-Down Day for students in 4th-8th grades in which donations of 50 cents will be collected for the American Cancer Society

NJHS members and candidates are required to complete twenty-four service hours (12 in-school hours and 12 out-of-school hours), and these hours should be completed by Friday, April 16th. If you know of an organization that is in need of student volunteers, please do not hesitate to contact me, Kelly Johnson, at the following email address: kajohnson@stlinusschool.org.
