Students are continuing to work toward the goals which they have set for themselves regarding the NJHS pillars of character, citizenship, leadership, service, and scholarship. Their service hours need to be completed by Friday, April 20th and, as a reminder, students need twenty-four service hours.

The NJHS Induction Ceremony will be held in May, and a note will be sent home as soon as the date has been scheduled.

During the second quarter, our four officers, Kathleen Sullivan, Andrea Horn, Kerry Mahoney, and Josie Delisi were invited to participate in a day of government at the Oak Lawn Village Hall. Thank you to Mayor Dave Heilmann, a St. Linus graduate, and his staff for welcoming our students into their offices and helping to support our students in their interest in learning more about their community.

The NJHS Peer Tutoring continues into the third quarter and is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays for all students who may benefit from the help of a peer. All of the students who offer their time to tutor students do a great job, and their efforts are very appreciated.

To celebrate Catholic Schools' Week, NJHS has sponsored a spelling bee in which students from grades 3-8 were selected within their homerooms and then invited to participate in a competition which was held in the gym and attended by the entire student body. Thank you to Mr. Fox who served as the judge, to Mrs. Delisi who helped with the certificates, and to our NJHS officers who prepared the word lists, made our sign, and assembled the gift bags. A final thank you goes to Dr. Stritch for his continued support of our students' desire to develop activities that enhance our school environment.

We are preparing for the 2nd Quarter NJHS PeeWee Luncheon, a quarterly activity initiated by the 8th grade officers in which students in grades K-8 may be recognized by teachers and/or peers for exhibiting the qualities which are held in high regard by the National Junior Honor Society. Those pillars are as follows: character, citizenship, leadership, service, and scholarship.

Participation in this event is not limited to students who are members of NJHS and, for the younger students, it is not a required "stepping stone" to NJHS membership. It is simply an attempt to foster an awareness of the importance of setting goals which will motivate our children to become student leaders. (Some schools call it a "Student of the Month" award or a "WWJD" award; we call it PeeWee NJHS!)

Thank you, again, to everyone for your support of all of our activities and fundraisers. The students earn such a sense of accomplishment when their endeavors are successful.

NJHS is currently planning a bake sale for Friday, December 9th. All members and petitioners are asked to donate a baked item for the sale, and all items will be sold for 50 cents. The proceeds of our sale will go toward purchasing gifts for a family on St. Linus's Giving Tree, and we are actually hoping to make enough money to support one of the volunteers for the COR Teen Mission trip which is scheduled for next year.

Our four officers, Kathleen Sullivan, Andrea Horn, Kerry Mahoney, and Josie Delisi traveled to Marian Catholic High School and, along with our student council officers, attended a leadership conference which was attended by the student leaders of several schools in the area. Students have been attending this conference for the past few years and find it to be a worthwhile adventure.

The NJHS Peer Tutoring is up and running for the third straight year. All of the students who offer their time to tutor the students in the younger grades do a great job, and their efforts are very appreciated.

The money collected from our Halloween Dress-Down Day will be donated to the Oak Lawn Children's Library. We are also collecting plastic bottle caps for the same cause. Feel free to send any caps that you may have to school with your children, and we will see that they are delivered to the museum.

We have enjoyed our first NJHS PeeWee Luncheon, a quarterly activity initiated by the 8th grade officers in which students in grades K-8 are recognized by teachers and/or peers for exhibiting the qualities which are held in high regard by the National Junior Honor Society. Those pillars are as follows: character, citizenship, leadership, service, and scholarship. Congratulations to the students who were chosen, and good luck to all of you next quarter!

Permission slips for our field trip to the Chicago Wolves game will be sent home next week. It is a much anticipated field trip available to the 7th and 8th grade members of NJHS. Nachos and cotton candy...now that's a motivator to participate in NJHS!

Service hour sheets need to be turned in by Friday, April 20th, and remember that will be here before we know it

The NJHS Induction Ceremony will be held in May, and the date will be announced as soon as I know what it is!

Thank you to everyone for your support of all of our activities and fundraisers. The students earn such a sense of accomplishment when their endeavors are successful.

      ANNOUNCEMENTS

The National Junior Honor Society has begun our year by electing four new officers. Kathleen Sullivan is our president, Andrea Horn is our vice-president, Kerry Mahoney is our secretary, and Josie Delisi is our treasurer. Congratulations to all of them! We have begun setting goals for ourselves and look forward to a successful year.

Twenty-nine students have petitioned for membership in NJHS, and I wish them the best of luck!

NJHS will have a taffy apple stand set up at Hawktoberfest, and proceeds from this sale will go directly back to St. Linus School. Please stop by and see us!

Our tutoring program will begin the week of October 10th. For those who may not be familiar with this program, NJHS members provide after-school tutoring twice a week. This service is available to all St. Linus students who may need a little help with reviewing the material that had been learned that day in class. The program is monitored by our librarian, Dee Conn, and students are referred by their classroom teacher.

NJHS service hours need to be completed by Friday, April 20th, and members and petitioners are required to perform twenty-four service hours (12 in-school and 12 out-of-school).

This year's NJHS field trip will be the ever-popular Chicago Wolves hockey game, so mark your calendars for January 11th. (The field trip is for members only. Petitioners need to wait until next year...)
