Students are still missing their shoe boxes for their Book Report project. They will be working on this project in both Library and Art. The school has supplied some of the materials on the students lists. Students can draw or create these projects using their imagination. We do ask at this time that these projects only be done in school. We will advise individually if they nee to be brought home. Please call me with any questions.

As we end the Second quarter, we have many exciting projects that we are working on within the Library.

Kindergarten - Has begun reading their stories during class and they practice reading the words that they are working on.

1st and 2nd Grades - They are currently working on book reports. Since many students in these grades have older siblings who are working on reports, it was thought to be fun to have these children work on them as well. Their reports will be picture book reports and have a formal cover. There is nothing that needs to be done at home; they will be working on this during Library Class.

3rd Grade - These students continue to work on their plays which should be ready by March. Mrs. Moran's class is diligently working on Annie Oakley and Mrs. McGovern's class is putting their hearts into Crazy Horse. It may seem like it is taking a long time to complete but the students are having a lot of fun and keep coming up with more creative ideas. They have, also, been given Library class time to work on the book reports. Students have been asked to bring their report book every week to Library class.

4th and 5th Grades - These students have completed some research projects during this quarter but we have also spent a lot of time on classroom reading and projects. The 4th grades in coordination with reading, library and Art have completed their Character report. The 4th and 5th grades are currently working on Dioramas instead of a written book report. Doing book reports in this fashion helps to show the students different modes of giving reports.

6th Grade - The 6th Grade students have just finished their autobiographies and did a great job. They are currently on display in the hallway outside the Library. They are beginning their genre of Mythology and will be researching a Greek God and watching the Clash of the Titians.

7th Grade - The 7th Grade has just completed Historical Fiction Genre and will be beginning Fairy Tale and Fantasy. We currently have 70 copies of Fairy Tale and Fantasy books on the self, however, if the students do not find something that they want to read, they are welcome to go to the Library. Students will be asked to read a book from this genre and will also be watching a fantasy movie to compare and contrast the book.

8th Grade - The students have completed the short story genre and are beginning the horror genre. I have not asked the students to read a book for this assignment instead we will be watching The Birds which should not be too scary but if there are any problems, please make me aware.

Hope everyone has had a great 2nd Quarter and I look forward to the next.

Hope everyone had a great summer!!!

Even though the summer was a longer break than in the past, it sure seemed to go by quick.

Here what will be going on in the Library -

• Four year old pre-school will be having Library on Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons.

•	Kindergarten will be having story time at the beginning of the year and will be taking out books every week, beginning next week. If the students do not remember to bring back the book that was checked out, then they will not be able to check out a book for that week. If a book gets lost, please replace it with another book in good condition.

•	1st grade will begin reading the Frog and Toad series aloud during class. The students will also begin taking about books on a weekly basis next week.

•	2nd grade will be reading the Magic Tree House Series aloud in class. The students will also begin taking about books on a weekly basis next week.

•	3rd Grade will begin working on a play – Crazy Horse (Mrs. McGovern) and Annie Oakley (Mrs. Moran). Hopefully, we will be able to perform later this year. The students will also begin taking about books on a weekly basis next week.

•	4th Grade will be working on a plant research project to start. Students will complete both book research and computer research for this project. Everything is done during class, so students should not have any homework. Beginning this year, students will receive a pass/fail and effort grade for Library. I still encourage students to take out books each week; however, it is no longer mandatory given the change in the course load of work. The decision is left to the student to decide.

•	5th Grade will be working on Classical Music Research at the start. They will be asked to research Bach, Beethoven, Brahms or Mozart. They will be given ample time during Library to complete my research however the student’s homeroom teacher may add additional information. I still encourage students to take out books each week; however, it is no longer mandatory given the change in the course load of work. The decision is left to the student to decide.

•	6th Grade will be working on “My Story, My World.” Students will be writing autobiographies as well as reading biographies of people of their choice. This will be completed in coordination with Mrs. Swi and may require students to go to Oak Lawn Library if we do not have a book of interest.

•	7th Grade will be working on Mysteries in coordination with Mrs. Swi and may require students to go to Oak Lawn Library if we do not have a mystery book of interest. Students will also be watching a Sherlock Holmes movie.

•	8th Grade will be working on short stories. Student will be reading the short story that the movie “A Wonderful Life” was based on. Students will also be watching “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

Hope everyone has a great 1st Quarter and please feel free to send me an email at dconn@stlinusschool.org with any questions.
