Music Syllabus

Music Syllabus 2011-2012
Ms. Mossuto

Week 1: Introduction and Explanation of Music Project. You and your partner need to have two books and 4 blank CD’s for next week.
Week 2: Students should have an approved book and begin researching their artist. Also, blank CD’s should be turned in for a copy of the music sample. Class time will be given to work on project.
Week 3: Students will receive music listening samples. Class time will be given to work on project.
Week 4: Class time will be given to work on project. Listening practice.
Week 5: Class time will be given to work on project. Listening practice.
Week 6: Presentations.
Week 7: Presentations.
Week 8: Unit Test

Task: You and your partner will research an artist from the specified decade. You can choose an artist from the list or have one approved by the instructor. You will need to bring in a book on the band that you are interested in researching. You do not necessarily need to read the whole book, but it should be used as a resource. Do not let long books deter you, as you are not required to read the entire thing. Your book should be approved by the teacher the second week of class. Please bring in two or three books, as you are not guaranteed your first choice. You will be responsible for a 2 page report, a 5 minute presentation, creating a poster and providing a music sample.

Grade

Report - The report should be two pages, double-spaced in Times New Roman font. The report should give the reader an idea of who the artist is; highlighting background information on the band, the type of music they were famous for and why the artist was significant/relevant to the time period. The report should not be a list of awards, performances or songs. More importantly, it is okay to use the internet as a resource, but DO NOT copy and paste information. If a student is caught copying a pasting he/she will receive an ‘F’ on the paper.

Poster - The poster should be completed on standard poster board and should be representative of the information compiled by the student. The poster needs to include graphics (album covers, pictures of the band, etc.). The poster will serve as a visual aid during the presentation. The poster should be neat and colorful, utilizing all of the space.

Music Sample - The student needs to bring in a listening sample from their artist. This can be a studio CD or simply a song downloaded from the internet and burned to a CD. All music samples need to be on a CD and tested before the presentation date (No ipods, flash drives etc.) Please note that most CD’s can be checked out from the library at no cost. The music sample cannot be the same song as the one used for our listening exam.

Presentation - The student needs to speak in a clear voice and should not be reading from a piece of paper. It is acceptable to use notecards, but eye contact is important. Students should be an ‘expert’ on their artist, it is not acceptable to read your report to the class. Students should utilize their poster and also provide a music sample. The presentation should be 5 minutes in length.

Students should also share an ‘important fact’ about their artist which the class will write down. Our ‘important facts’ will make up the unit exam. The important fact should give us an idea of who the artist is. An example of a good important fact would be ‘The Commodores were the most successful band for their label Motown in the 1970’s.’

Unit Test - The unit test will be comprised of a written portion (important facts) and a listening exam.
