Homework for Monday
Reader A Big Job
Math Workbook p. 33

We made a preview visit to the Book Fair today and your children wrote down their favorites with prices. You may use this list if you attend the Book Fair on Family Night, Tuesday, 5:30-8:30 p.m. If you cannot attend on Tuesday, you may wish to send your child's shopping/wish list back to school on Wednesday with money to purchase books. That is the day we will revisit the Fair to make our purchases. Please don't send any money until Wednesday.
Thanks.

I spoke with the children today about the class' general decline in the appearance of their handwriting. We are writing more and more, and most are easily able to keep up, but it's disappointing to see that many who arrived in 1st grade with beautiful printing have become a little sloppy, especially when it comes to printing their names. Some are in a rush to finish early. It's important to find the right balance between speed and neatness. I told the children that I will soon be using their work in grammar and other subjects to assess their handwriting as well as the work they do in their handwriting books. Please encourage them to do their best both at home and at school.

We have finished our second reading unit and are taking a Unit Test during the early part of this week. We will begin the third unit with our new reader on Wednesday. This means that our typical weekly reading/spelling/phonics schedule will be different this week and next. We will introduce our new spelling words and phonics story on Wednesday. We will finish with our spelling test and selection test next week before the Thanksgiving break and work on a Readers Theater selection. Please check the blog for daily updates and homework.

Reading: The Big Mess Read aloud

November 20, 2009

Week of Nov. 23 - 25

On Friday, we read our new main selection The Little Red Hen. Your child will bring their reader home on Monday to read this selection to you.

Our weekly selection test will take place on Tuesday, as will our weekly spelling test on the following words: red, tell, bed, well, fed, fell, mess, yell, said, who

In Math, I'll be assessing concepts and skills taught in our second unit, including addition and subtraction facts to 10, adding and subtracting across and down, using fact families to add and subtract, and strategies to solve problems. The kids will be allowed to manipulate cubes or their bead counters to assist them, if needed.

Scholastic Book order forms were sent home recently. If you are interested in ordering, please return forms with payment by Tuesday, 11/24.

Have a great weekend.

Week of Nov. 30-Dec. 4

I hope that you had a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday!

As Advent begins, we are watching, waiting, and getting ready to welcome Jesus! We prepare our hearts by doing things for others to show we care. Your child will have some colored paper strips in their home folder over the next few weeks. When they demonstrate caring, sharing, helping, and loving at home, please help them write what they did on one of the strips and return it to school. We are building an Advent Caring Chain to hang in our hallway and hope to make it really long by our Christmas break!

Spelling Words for Friday's Test: met, get, pet, ten, let, yes, want, good, plan, trap
High Frequency words: for, some, good, too, want

You may have noticed a handwriting grade on last week's grammar workbook pages. I will occasionally use written work other than pages from their handwriting book to assess their ongoing handwriting progress, and will make corrections as needed. Please take some time to look over your child's handwriting with them.

Some of our students are nearly ready to begin subtraction on their weekly fact drills, so please include subtraction fact practice into your daily routine if your child has mastered +6.
