Scholastic Book order forms are in your child's Home folder today. If you are interested in ordering books for Christmas gifts, please send your forms/payment in by Monday, 12/5 so I can be sure of delivery before Christmas break. If the order is a secret, include a note, and I'll brown bag it before sending it home. You can also order online, using the scholastic.com classroom code H3ZD8, and have your order shipped directly to your home.

This Friday, the NJHS is sponsoring a bake sale. All items are 50 cents and the proceeds will help a family participating in the parish Giving Tree. If you would like your child to be able to purchase baked goods, please send money in a marked envelope on Friday, 12/9.

We will be performing You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch at this year's Christmas Concert on Tuesday, December 20. The lyrics to this song are challenging, but also a fun reading lesson for the kids. Please help them rehearse these lyrics at home. They can be found in your child's Home folder today. Please keep them handy and practice often! They don't have to be returned to school.

A few more things...
St. Linus School is participating in Macy's A Million Reasons to Believe. The Student Council has asked us to write letters to Santa Claus. For every letter received Macy's will donate one dollar to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. We will be writing letters in class. Please send a stamped, blank envelope to school by this Friday. Thanks!

Again this year, the St. Linus school children have the opportunity to share their blessings with those less fortunate by participating in filling food baskets for the needy from Holy Family/Notre Dame of Chicago Parishes. Our class has been asked to donate tuna for the baskets. Cash donations to purchase perishables are also appreciated. Please send your donations to school by December 19th. Thanks again!

Week of December 12-16, 2011

Christmas excitement is in the air and in our classroom. We are learning the lyrics to our Christmas Concert song, You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch, and the kids are having a lot of fun with it. Please continue to practice with them at home -- it is a challenging song!

The phonics focus for the week of Dec 12 is short vowels and final consonant blends. Spelling words for Friday's test: and, best, fast, just, hand, must, out, came, sent, next
High Frequency words: came, know, out, she, there

We are participating in the Student Government door decorating contest this week. Our theme is Santa's Workshop. The children will be making the decorations, but if you have extra craft supplies at home you'd like to donate to this effort, send them in! We could use tinsel, glitter or glitter glue, Christmas ribbon and bows, etc. Please don't go out and buy anything, but if you have some things laying around, we will use them. Our door will be judged on its theme, creativity, visual effect, imagination, and student involvement.

If you haven't already, please send in a blank, stamped envelope. We are writing letters to Santa Claus!

Week of December 19-21

THREE MORE SCHOOL DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS BREAK --- YIPPEE!!!

No stories in the Reader or Spelling words this short week. We will get back into our regular routine after the break.

TUESDAY
Christmas Concert Begins promptly at 7 p.m. in Church
I'll be there no later than 6:45, so look for me in church. Children sit with their teachers. I do not yet know the order of performances. Girls have permission to wear "Whoville" hairdos! All should be wearing their Christmas best for the performance. After the concert ends, I ask that the parents come to me to collect their children, so we don't lose any in the crowd.

WEDNESDAY
Just announced! Dress Down Day. Students can bring $1.00 for charity and wear red and green.
Field Trip!
Party in the afternoon!
Merry Christmas!

Monday, December 19

The Christmas Countdown begins!

No homework this week.

We will take a facts quiz on Tuesday!

Tuesday 7 p.m. shart -- Christmas Concert. I'd arrive a little early to get a good seat, if I were you! Have your child find me in Church when you arrive. I'll be there by 6:45 at the latest. We will be having a dress rehearsal on Tuesday afternoon, so the kids will find out then where we will be sitting as we wait to perform. We can't wait to show our stuff! Kids should be wearing their Christmas "best" and girls may wear "Whoville hairdos" if you'd like. Don't forget your camera! A BIG Thanks in advance to Mrs. Dillon, vocal coach and choreographer, Mrs. DeSanto, pianist, and Ms. Judy Lei, violinist for all your help pulling our version of Mr. Grinch together!

Field Trip on Wednesday morning, which is also a Dress Down Day if students bring in $1.00 for charity. Our bus departs at 9:15 and returns to school by 12 noon.
Party in the afternoon!

We were all sad to hear of the passing of our friend and longtime school custodian, Mr. Dave Barski. Arrangements are as follows: Wake, Wednesday, 12/21 3-9 p.m., Funeral, Thursday, 11 a.m., both at St. Linus Church.

Concert tonight at 7 p.m. in Church. Just to clear up any confusion, we do not meet in the classroom. We will all meet at the church. Send your child over to me as soon as you arrive so I can finish up their "costume."

Our Advent Good Deeds chain measured a full 11 feet long. Ella was the lucky winner of the chain in a random drawing and gets to wear the chain home today!

Wednesday -- Bring $1.00 to wear green and red !
Field Trip in the morning!
Party at 12:30!
At 2:40, their sugar-filled and sugar-coated selves are all yours for the next 2 weeks! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your families!

NEWS FLASH!

For the concert tonight, Room 16 children will be seated on the right side of church, in the 3rd and 4th rows (marked Reserved.) The seats ahead of us are generally for handicapped use. There will be open seating just to our left in the center pews, if you get to church early enough. DOORS OPEN AT 6:30 P.M. If you want to videotape the concert, you will need to do that from the choir loft. Please come to me to recapture your children at the end of the concert. I don't want anyone to get lost in the crowd! Thanks! See you tonight.

A big thanks to the moms who chaperoned our field trip to the Oak Lawn Children's Museum today, Mrs. Houbolt and Mrs. Ryan and also to the party planners extraordinare, Mrs. Celauro, Mrs. Cholke, Mrs. Heilmann, Mrs. Zayyad, and again, Mrs. Ryan. I'm truly grateful for the help. It was a great field trip and a super party! Thanks to all who offered their time and help. Have a blessed Christmas and a wonderful New Year!
