         <title>Week of February 6-10</title>
         <description><![CDATA[This week, our phonics focus is on the long i sound and medial consonants.  

Due to the shorter week, our Spelling test will take place on Thursday.  Here are the words:

like, ride, nice, white, time, five, your, friend, never, rabbit

High Frequency (shoebox) words:  be, soon, pretty, friend, your
Please continue to work with these words frequently at home.

In Math, we are learning about money!  We are counting coins.  If you want to help your child learn about money concepts at home, pull out the piggy bank and have them sort the coins.  They should be able to count combinations of pennies, nickels, and dimes, so far.  We will add quarters soon.  Remind them to count the coins with the greatest value first, and ask them to show you why they should do that!

Tuesday is the 100th day of school!  We are planning some fun 100th day activities to celebrate!

On Thursday, school will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m.  I will be available from 1-4 p.m. and 5-7:30 p.m. for optional conferences.  If you have concerns or would like to discuss your child's progress, please stop by.  Remember, I am available every morning, and most afternoons after school as well, and we can always "meet" by phone or email.  

Reminder:  There is no school on Friday, 2/10.  Enjoy the long weekend!

Coming up...  We will have a simple Valentine's Day celebration on Tuesday, February 14th.  The children may bring valentine cards to share with the class.  Please make sure they include <strong>all</strong> their classmates.  We have 9 boys and 8 girls in our room.

         <title>Friday, January 13</title>
         <description>Today marks the end of the 2nd quarter.  You are halfway to 2nd grade!  Report cards will be distributed next Friday, January 20.

No school this Monday, 1/16, as we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.&apos;s birthday.

For the week of January 17-20, our phonics focus is on the long a vowel sound with the CVCe spelling pattern (consonant/vowel/consonant, followed by silent e) and the inflected ending -ed.

New spelling words for Friday&apos;s test:  ate, bake, gave, late, make, take, as, after, helped, wanted.

Wednesday, 1/18 is Ice Cream day.  Please send $1.00 in a marked envelope, if interested.

In January, we begin celebrating grade level Masses once each month.  Our first Mass takes place on Friday, January 27th at 8:30 a.m.  If your child has a reading part, they will be asked to bring home their part and practice.  We will also practice several times in Church.  You are most welcome to attend and celebrate Mass with us!  More information to come as we get closer to the date.

Just to clear up any confusion about the Readers Theater ---- we will not be doing a performance for the parents this time.  We will be performing for the preschool instead.  Sorry about the late notice - I couldn't make any definite plans until I knew what was happening to prep for our Mass with the Cardinal.  We will definitely do our next Readers Theater for you, the parents!  Thanks for your interest!

Reminders:

Please send appropriate outerwear, especially boots, when needed.  When the sidewalks are dry, we still try to get outside for some fresh air!  Don't forget to send shoes to change into!

In Reading, we are working on the Unit 3 Skills Test this week, so there are no new stories in the Reader.  Next week, we will go back to our normal Reading/Phonics/Spelling routine.

The 2nd Quarter ends on Friday.  Report cards will be issued the following Friday, January 20.

Reminder:
Cardinal George will be here to celebrate our National Blue Ribbon status at Mass at 10:30 on Sunday, January 15.  Classes will sit together in church and children should wear their school uniforms.  There is a reception with the Cardinal following Mass.  I&apos;ll keep you updated as I receive additional information.

Scholastic Book orders, if interested, should be returned with payment by this Friday, 1/13.

Please make sure your child has a hat and gloves for outdoor recess on chilly days.

         <description><![CDATA[Cardinal George will be celebrating our Blue Ribbon recognition at Mass on <strong>Sunday, January 15th at 10:30 a.m.</strong>  We would like to celebrate together as a school.  Please have your children attend Mass in their school uniforms and we will sit together as a class.

A big thanks to the moms who chaperoned our field trip to the Oak Lawn Children&apos;s Museum today, Mrs. Houbolt and Mrs. Ryan and also to the party planners extraordinare, Mrs. Celauro, Mrs. Cholke, Mrs. Heilmann, Mrs. Zayyad, and again, Mrs. Ryan.  I&apos;m truly grateful for the help.   It was a great field trip and a super party!  Thanks to all who offered their time and help.  Have a blessed Christmas and a wonderful New Year!
