October 6th-9th, 2009

Hi Parents,
The class is doing very well! We are on our 4th letter book, we're learning our sounds, and blending them nicely. We are also doing well understanding patterning in our Math. We have been making patterns with cubes, but may have more fun with candy corn and pretzels...sometime this week!

Our agenda for the rest of the week:

Congratulations Brian as our star-of-the-week!! Baby Duck had a wonderful visit with Kayla last week-I know she will have a terrific time with the Bayers!

Tuesday: We began a new class poem callled, "Pumpkin, Pumpkin". Thank you for assisting your child with their poem activity papers I have sent home. The class seem to enjoy these.
Aa picture paper for homework tonight. If your child draws their pictures, make sure he/she colors them in. Please remember: only short a sound pictures (alligator, apple, etc..)

Wednesday: A letter went home yesterday explaining the details of Monsignor Cardiff's mass.
School will be dismissed @ 11:30, but the Kindergarten students will be coming out @ 11:25 to avoid the rush. Remember-no lunches!

Friday: Gym
Scholastic book orders due back

No school next Monday, October 12th-enjoy the long weekend!
I mentioned in Monday's newsletter that I have begun saying the Hail Mary with the students in the morning. Please say this prayer with your son/daughter each night before bed when you're able to.

Have a good week-Go Bears!

Hi Parents,
It was nice having the 3 day weekend~another one to come for the students!

This week's agenda:

Tuesday: We went to the all-school mass. I was quite pleased with their behavior.
Aa printing paper assigned for homework~due tomorrow.
Please have your child practice printing the letters we have learned thus far. As I stated in today's newsletter, I will be giving the students a letter test next week. Let me know if you need paper for practice. I will also be testing the students on letter recognition of the letters we have learned as well as their sound.

Today I had our Marist helper, Rich review blending sounds with a few of the students. The sounds we are learning are: oc, og, ac, ag, ca, ga. Next week we are working on letter book Dd. We will begin blending with 3 letters. Some words will be "real" words such as dog, and some will be "nonsense" words such as dag, gad.

Due to the shortened week, I will not have a star-of-the-week and will not be sending home Baby Duck. I will resume it next week. Baby Duck went to the spa this weekend!

Wednesday: We are talking about "a" as a middle sound in Reading. The students will tell me a word for our A word poster. (ex: mad, sad, glad, etc.)

Thursday:Rest towels will be coming home to be cleaned.

We will be having a Halloween party on Friday, October 30th from 10:30-11:30. Mrs. Lundy will be organizing it. If you would like to participate in the fun, please contact her.
I will be sending home a letter next week explaining more.

I've noticed that several students are already in need of new crayons. Ask your child if he/she is in need of some. No more that a box of 24, please.

We are doing very well saying the "Hail Mary" every morning. Continue to say it with your child

Since October is Fire Safety month, I will be reading several stories within these next 2 weeks to the class and discussing how we stay safe. I also have some coloring/cutting activities planned.

Next week I hope to take the class on a walk around school to see the pretty fall colors. I will incorporate it into our Math/ Reading lesson.

Thanks to all the families who have provided the snacks for Snack time. I appreciate your cooperation and the students are thoroughly enjoying them.

I have noticed that many of the students have ordered milk for the month of October to drink at lunch time. Unfortunately when I come back from lunch, I notice SEVERAL opened, almost full cartons on my extra table that were put there and left to be thrown out. I tell the students practically every day that they need to drink their milk. I also pass out straws to make it easier to drink. If you have ordered milk for your child to drink at lunch, please tell him/her that they are to try and drink it. You would be shocked to see the amount of milk that is poured down the drain on a daily basis~its such a waste and of your money too!

Have a good rest of the week and enjoy the 3 day weekend!

October 19-23rd, 2009

Hi Parents,
We finally had a beautiful Fall day today. I was able to take the class out for our leaf activity. I took a few pictures and will post them sometime this week.

The events for this week:

Monday: Congratulations Alyssa~she is our star-of-the-week and Baby Duck will be visiting her home this week. Have fun Alyssa!
Began letter book Dd
Began chapter 3 in Math~ next week we will begin printing numbers 1-5. I will be assigning homework as reinforcement.
*When reviewing the letter sound of D with your child, please remember that the sound is not "duh". Many students make this mistake.

Tuesday: Begin a new class poem~hope you are enjoying these poem assignments with your child. We enjoy reading them during our circle time.
Dd picture paper assigned for homework. As I mentioned in a previous letter, please have your child find/draw their pictures. The students have to present their paper to the class and sometimes it appears that a child does not know what is on their paper because it was done for him/her. I encourage you to help your child rather that do the assignment for him/her.
This is a start to teaching your child to become more independent. Thank you.
Visit from Mother Goose.
Letter test of letters Cc, Oo, Gg, and Aa. The results will come home with your child's next progress report.

Wednesday: Ice cream day~ bring $1.00.
DOG day: Please have your child bring in either a picture of a dog or a stuffed dog.

Thursday: Art

Friday: Gym~ all students must wear their gym shoes.
Ladies Guild hot lunch

A letter went home today regarding the Halloween party and costumes. Any questions regarding the party, please contact Mrs. Lundy.

I also sent home the first of many to come word lists. A word list will be sent home with all our letter books. I told the class today that they do not have to learn to read all the words at once~this leads to frustration and I do not want to cause that. Do only a few words at a time.

Have a good week!

October 26-30th, 2009

Hi Parents,
The month of October has gone by rather quickly~I can't believe we are at the end of the 1st quarter and next week is already November!

Our last week of October:

Monday: Congratulations Andrew on being our star-of-the-week! Hope Baby Duck enjoys her visit at your home-I'm sure she will.

Red Ribbon Week: A letter went home last week explaining the events. This week is a week where being "drug free " is discussed. I make this topic easy for the students to grasp. I explain that only our parents and the doctor can give us medicine, that we should not touch medicine that we see our parents/grandparents take, and if Mom/Dad give us a vitamin we should only have what is given to us. That's about all I really discuss at this age.
Please have your child wear their red ribbon everyday this week.

Tuesday: Dd printing paper assigned for homework.
* " Its the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" will be on TV tonight~channel 7 @ 7:00.

Wednesday: Our dozen objects in an egg carton activity is to be brought in for class discussion.

Thursday: WEAR RED DAY for red ribbon week. Students may wear jeans and something red.
Class poem paper assigned for homework.
We will be carving a pumpkin!

Friday: HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
Costumes are to be worn to school.
Parade outside school @ 8:30.
Class party from 10:30-11:30-feel free to come*
Gym-Have your child wear/ bring their gym shoes.
*If you plan on attending the class Halloween party, please explain to your child that when the party is over, you must go home and he/she has to stay at school. Quite often over the years, I have had a few students suddenly develop a "stomach ache" when their mom has to leave and want to go home. This always leads to drama and tears. So...please remind your child~thank you for your cooperation.

Keep on reviewing the word list I sent home, a new one will be coming home next week when we begin letter book Ss.

2nd quarter begins next week so I will be giving all the students one of their folders from the ones that were brought in on the first day of school. Many of the current folders have seen better days.

Don't forget to turn your clocks back this Saturday-an extra hour of sleep, but unfortunately it will begin getting dark @ 5:00-how sad!

Have a Happy Halloween and hope to see many of you on Friday.

Boo!
