January 4-8th, 2010

Hi Parents,

Happy New Year! Hope you had a enjoyable and relaxing Christmas break. I certainly did.
Our week ahead:

Monday: Happy belated birthday Maddie!
Kody is our star-of-the-week! Have fun with Baby Duck.
A new word list and a copy of our first story went home today in your child's folder. We will be reading our story on Wednesday. Since Wednesday is our "Special" free day, all upcoming stories in our books will be read/discussed on Wednesdays. After your child practices reading their story, I would suggest you do the following: point out various words for your child to sound out, ask your child to spell some of the words, and ask comprehension questions about the story. I have noticed in the past that students tend to memorize the stories when they get sent home, and are unable to read certain words when they are pointed out.

Tuesday: Tt picture paper assigned for homework. Just a reminder: if your child prefers to draw their pictures, please make sure the pictures are colored. The paper looks more presentable when the pictures are colored.

In Math, we will learn about numbers 11-20. In this particular chapter, the students will be required to recognize, count, and print 1-30.

Wednesday: Tt printing paper along with a paper for your child to practice printing their full name will be assigned for homework.

We will be reading our first story in 2 small groups.

Thursday: Make sure you have your show-and-tell packed before bedtime!

Friday: "Show-and-Tell" day! As mentioned in the newsletter, please have your child bring in one of their favorite Christmas presents. I do this activity every year, and the kids just love it. Please make sure your child does not forget to bring something. I have had to make some last minute phone calls to parents in the past because their child forgot to bring something. Its not a phone call I like to make, especially when a parent is not home, or they bring up just anything.(This has all happened.)

Gym: Mr. Fox became a dad this morning! His wife had a baby girl named Cameron Therese. She weighed 7lbs./ 21inches. I think he will be out the remainder of the week. A sub. will be in. Congrats. Mr. and Mrs. Fox! What a great way to begin the new year.

Some more info...
If the sun is shining, and the sidewalks are clear, I usually like to take the class out for a quick walk. Its good to get some fresh air. Please make sure your child has a hat, or hood, gloves, and for the girls, tights, or they can wear sweat pants under their jumpers. I have the girls remove them in the bathroom when they arrive in the morning, and put them back on if we go out for recess.

Next Friday, January 15th is the end of the 2nd quarter~this means testing time again!
Please review the following concepts with your child:

Recognizing/knowing the letters and sounds we have covered.
Printing of the letters, and numbers 1-20
Counting up to 50
Reading various words from our previous word lists.

I think that's about it for the week. Stay warm and healthy!

January 11-15th, 2010

Hi Parents,
Hope you enjoyed the pictures I posted from our visit to church last week to see Baby Jesus and our Show-and-Tell.

Our news for this week:
Monday: Congratulations Brooke! Brooke is our star-of-the-week.
Began letter book F. In a few weeks, we will start completing a letter book a week rather than the usual 2 week period. In order to complete the series by the end of the year, we have to do this. Be prepared for an increase in word lists, and homework.
A Scholastic book order went home.

Tuesday: Ff picture paper assigned for homework.
In Math we are covering numbers 16-25. Today I began asking each of the students to count to 50. The majority were able to do it~I was quite pleased!

Wednesday: Due to all our Christmas activities last month, its been awhile since I've done a Science lesson with the class. I am getting back into it this week. Science will be more in depth in 1st grade, but I would like to touch on different topics with the class this year. For our next few lessons, I will be discussing the purpose of various body parts. We will cover the heart, muscles, brain, lungs, and stomach. Also, since the beginning of the year, I have read many an animal fact with the class. This is something I have incorporated into my Circle time for the past several years, and have found that the students really enjoy listening to them.

Thursday: Class poem paper assigned for homework.

Friday: Gym (Mr. Fox is back!)
Ladies Guild Hot lunch
Scholastic book orders due
End of the 2nd quarter

Please continue to review the weekly word lists with your child. It is evident that you are doing this at home~the students are reading quite well.

We have a 3 day weekend next week~ enjoy!

Have a good week,
Mrs. Revis

January 20-22nd, 2010

Hi Parents,
Our events for the remainder of this week:

Congratulations Maddie~she is our star-of-the-week!

*I have received a few baby pictures, and info. sheets today. I forgot to mention in the letter I sent home, to please have your child color the little feet that are bordering the info. sheet. I will have the students who brought their papers in today color their paper in class.

*Ff printing paper was assigned today for homework.

*Report cards are being distributed this Friday. This report card differs from the 1st semester one. We do a formal report card in January and in May. On this report card you will see the grading system of E, M, and N. Each letter indicates the following:

E: Exceeds classroom expectations~ This means your child does above and beyond what is expected. I give out very few of these now since we are only 1/2 way through the school year.

M: Meets classroom expectations~ This means your child is performing at grade level and is doing what is expected at this point in the year.

N:Needs Improvement~ This is self explanatory-if your child receives one or more of this grade, please discuss it with him and how it can be improved.

You may keep your child's report card, but I would appreciate it if you would sign and return the envelope. Thank you, and please congratulate your child on a job well done so far!

Have a good rest of the week,
Mrs. Revis

Hi Parents,

Congratulations JACholke is our star-of-the-week! I'm sure Baby Duck is having a terrific time at his house.

In Room 13 this week:

We began letter book E~as I stated in the newsletter, we only learn the short e sound as in elephant. Next week we will be reading another story from our books.

In Math we began counting by 10's to 100. Next week we will be counting by 2's and 5's up to 100. Please have your child practice their counting~especially by 5's and 2's.

All Good Deed" hearts are due in this Friday, January 29th. Only a few students have turned them in. Mrs. Gute will be displaying these on the bulletin board by the gym.

Our 100th day of school is next Tuesday, February 2nd. All 100 day posters are due back. Have fun with this project and be creative. Please let me know if you need extra paper.

This Sunday, January 31st starts Catholic Schools Week. A schedule of events went home in your child's folder today. I hope to see you there. Please make sure to stop by and visit the clasroom~your child is excited to show off their room and their work. I told the class to "check out" the 1st grade rooms~they will be there before you know it!

We have started the 3rd quarter out well~I am amazed at how well the class is reading and writing. Thanks for all your help~it really shows.

Have a good rest of the week, stay warm and see you on Sunday!
