January 4-8th, 2010

Hi Parents,

Happy New Year! Hope you had a enjoyable and relaxing Christmas break. I certainly did.
Our week ahead:

Monday: Happy belated birthday Maddie!
Kody is our star-of-the-week! Have fun with Baby Duck.
A new word list and a copy of our first story went home today in your child's folder. We will be reading our story on Wednesday. Since Wednesday is our "Special" free day, all upcoming stories in our books will be read/discussed on Wednesdays. After your child practices reading their story, I would suggest you do the following: point out various words for your child to sound out, ask your child to spell some of the words, and ask comprehension questions about the story. I have noticed in the past that students tend to memorize the stories when they get sent home, and are unable to read certain words when they are pointed out.

Tuesday: Tt picture paper assigned for homework. Just a reminder: if your child prefers to draw their pictures, please make sure the pictures are colored. The paper looks more presentable when the pictures are colored.

In Math, we will learn about numbers 11-20. In this particular chapter, the students will be required to recognize, count, and print 1-30.

Wednesday: Tt printing paper along with a paper for your child to practice printing their full name will be assigned for homework.

We will be reading our first story in 2 small groups.

Thursday: Make sure you have your show-and-tell packed before bedtime!

Friday: "Show-and-Tell" day! As mentioned in the newsletter, please have your child bring in one of their favorite Christmas presents. I do this activity every year, and the kids just love it. Please make sure your child does not forget to bring something. I have had to make some last minute phone calls to parents in the past because their child forgot to bring something. Its not a phone call I like to make, especially when a parent is not home, or they bring up just anything.(This has all happened.)

Gym: Mr. Fox became a dad this morning! His wife had a baby girl named Cameron Therese. She weighed 7lbs./ 21inches. I think he will be out the remainder of the week. A sub. will be in. Congrats. Mr. and Mrs. Fox! What a great way to begin the new year.

Some more info...
If the sun is shining, and the sidewalks are clear, I usually like to take the class out for a quick walk. Its good to get some fresh air. Please make sure your child has a hat, or hood, gloves, and for the girls, tights, or they can wear sweat pants under their jumpers. I have the girls remove them in the bathroom when they arrive in the morning, and put them back on if we go out for recess.

Next Friday, January 15th is the end of the 2nd quarter~this means testing time again!
Please review the following concepts with your child:

Recognizing/knowing the letters and sounds we have covered.
Printing of the letters, and numbers 1-20
Counting up to 50
Reading various words from our previous word lists.

I think that's about it for the week. Stay warm and healthy!

Mrs. Revis
