March 3-5th, 2010

Hi Parents,
The month of March is here already! The year is flying by~we have been in Kindergarten for 120 days as of tomorrow. Wow! I am so impressed by our reading and our printing. Our weekly writings we do on Fridays in our Journals have improved greatly since we began writing in them last October.

We had a visit from Maddie's grandma today. She was our first "Rocking chair" reader. The class certainly enjoyed her visit. Please let me know if you have a relative in your family who would be interested in coming. Your child would greatly appreciate it!

We completed another story in our letter book today. It was our longest one yet, but we all did well.

I sent home take-home books with all the students yesterday. Please encourage your child to read it to you and other family members as often as possible. If you feel the book I send home is not challenging enough, or is too difficult for your child to read, please let me know and I will keep it in mind when I choose the next book for your child to read.

In Math, we talked about fractions. We discussed 1/2 and 1/4. As reinforcement of this concept, ask your child to cut (with your assistance), a sandwich, or a slice of toast into halves and fourths. I brought in graham crackers as an example. The class really seemed to grasp this concept.

I will be doing another Math challenge packet next week. I enjoy doing these with the class-it makes them think a little!!

A schedule of when Baby Duck will be visiting your home should come home next week. Every one will have one overnight with her.

Many of the students seem to be doing their Lenten promises. We discuss these daily. Thank you for encouraging your child to follow through on their daily promise. Its important to do a little something each day during Lent.

All Scholastic book orders are due back this Friday. After this order, I will be sending home one more for the year.

Well, that's about it for now. I'm glad to see the snow melting. Hope Spring weather is just around the corner. We need it!!

Enjoy the remainder of your week~stay healthy!

March 9-12th, 2010

Hi Parents,

This week in Room 13:

We began letter book Nn. The students are doing quite well in completing a book a week. We are also reading our stories with more ease.

Our chapter on Money was introduced in Math yesterday. As mentioned in my newsletter, Kindergarten students only learn the penny, nickel, and dime. We learn their names, as well as the value of each. Yesterday I explained to the class that you can tell a coin's age by the year that is on it. Today they were all given a penny and we discovered that the oldest penny was dated 1971! ( I won't tell you how old I was back then!) We had many pennies that were only 1 year old! Today we discussed the nickel, and tomorrow the dime. Please review the name and value of each one with your child. Before Easter break, we will have a play store and the students will get to purchase various items but have to know the value of each of the coins. As a review, put some change out and ask your child to show you various amounts:
3cents, 7cents( either 7 pennies, or a nickel and 2 pennies), etc..

Thank you to Grandpa Hennessy for coming to read to the class yesterday. Tomorrow Grandma Lundy is coming. Thanks,Grandparents for visiting and reading to the class~it means so much!

Yesterday we began our overnight visits with Baby Duck. Maddie had a great visit last night and Brian is enjoying his visit tonight. JAC and Kian will have their visits on Wednesday and Thursday.

Take-home books went home today. Everyone returned their books on time last week~thank you! As reinforcement, after your child reads their book, ask him/her comprehension questions, and have your child point out the various punctuation marks such as periods, commas, question marks, and exclamation points.

The snow is melting and we have had outdoor recess lately~how nice. I think we're in for some rain this week. That's ok, its better than snow!

Just a reminder, we change our clocks this weekend~spring ahead! We lose an hour of sleep, but we will still have daylight @ 7:00 p.m.!

Enjoy the remainder of the week, and the upcoming 3 day weekend. There is no school next Monday, March 15th.

Take care,
Mrs. Revis

March 18th-19th, 2010

Hi Parents,
Oh my its been a crazy week~sorry for the delay in my blog ...we'll blame it on the leprechaun that made an appearance yesterday. I'm sure you heard all about it!

Johnny Dillon and Eric had their visit with Baby Duck this week. Emily has her visit today. We sure are enjoying our overnights with her.

Thank you for your cooperation with the "take-home" books. The students really seem to be enjoying these stories. All books are due back tomorrow.

Tomorrow, I will be quizzing each child on the name and value of a penny, nickel and dime. This concept is easy for some, but confusing for others. I will let the students pick out a reward if they are able to identify all 3 coins and know their value. Please practice this with you child.

Next week a letter will be coming home explaining our next Lenten activity. Your child will be doing lots of "good deeds" around the house in order to do this activity. I hope you are continuing to encourage your child to do their daily Lenten promise.

All mission banks are due back on March 26th.

As I stated above, we had a visit from a leprechaun yesterday. He came into the room while we were outside and made a complete mess of it! It was crazy! I will be posting pictures tonight so you can see how we were searching for gold with our magnifying glasses. We also spotted the leprechaun hiding in the bushes in the courtyard!

Enjoy this gorgeous weather today~did you hear whats in store for us this weekend?

Take care,
Mrs. Revis

March 23-26, 2010

Hi Parents,
Happy Spring! The Winter season is over~hurray! Its nice to see the flowers coming up in the courtyard.
Our week ahead:
We began letter book Pp this week. Since we have been completing a book a week for a few weeks now, I am quite pleased with the progress we have made. Our reading is terrific!
Our Pp printing paper is assigned for homework tonight..

Hurray! Last week we were all tested on money recognition of the penny, nickel, and dime. We did very well. Next week I will have a "play store" set up in which the students can buy various items. I will provide the change, but the students will have to be able to count out various amounts, so please go over this at home.

We are doing a great job reading our take home books. I have some old first grade readers and beginning next week I will choose 3-4 students as my "spot light" readers to read to the class. I hope to take pictures so make sure you check them out on my blog.

Our St. Baldrick's assembly will be tomorrow @ 12:30.

All mission banks are due back this Friday.

Easter is almost here so that means the end of our Lenten promise calendar. Please continue to encourage your child to do their promise. A letter went home yesterday regarding our "good deed" eggs. I appreciate your cooperation with this activity.

Enjoy your week!
