September 6-9, 2011

Hi Parents,
We made it through our first week of school! The temperature in the room today was quite comfortable compared to last week's. We were able to go outside and play in the courtyard. How nice!
Our week:

Tuesday: In Reading we began working on the letter C. We listened to a story and sang a song all about words that begin with C. I sent home the "C" picture homework paper. A letter was sent home along with it explaining what to do on it.
We also began our first chapter in Math. We discussed "position" words such as on, above, top, middle, and bottom. This concept is fairly simple for the students to understand, so I move through this chapter quickly.

Wednesday: Computers
"C" picture papers due back so we can discuss them.

Thursday: Library
"Cc" printing paper assigned for homework.
Mary's Birthday! As mentioned in today's newsletter, please have your child bring in a real, or artificial flower. We will be having a small celebration to honor Jesus' mother's birthday.

Friday: Gym
All "Introduce myself to the class" papers due back. I have already received several and have begun discussing them with the class. They are quite informative and fun to read.
Cc printing papers due back.

* I'm still waiting for several families to return the Kindergarten Questionnaire that was handed out at my opening meeting. Please return yours if you have not done so.

*A few students do not have a snack and/or rest towel. I would greatly appreciate it if you would make sure your child has both every day.

Rest towels will be coming home this week to be cleaned. I send rest towels home every 2 weeks and snack towels come home weekly if necessary.

Thank you to Mrs. Lundy for this week's snack.

Today I began my "Artist-of-the-week" activity. Each week I choose a student to draw a picture for our newsletter and a picture for our Artist of the week board. Sofia was chosen as our artist this week. Congratulations Sofia!!

We are slowly getting into a routine, and I am pleased with our progress. Remember to do a daily check of your child's folder and send it back in their back pack.

Have a good rest of the week.

September 13-16, 2011

Hi Parents,
Hope you are having a good week so far. Another warm two days in the classroom. It looks like tomorrow will be cooler. Thank God. Our week:

We began letter book O yesterday. As in all the vowels, we only learn the short sounds. So, the O sound is in words such as October, and in octopus, to name a few. Speaking of octopus, we listened to a story about an octopus today. As many of you parents who know me, I am quite interested in animal facts and enjoy reading my many books about animals and their amazing qualities. Ask your child on occasion what new animal fact he/she has learned.

The "O" picture paper was assigned today for homework. I have told the students that if they draw pictures, they are to be colored. They appear so much nicer and the other students pay attention more when the paper looks colorful as it is presented.

In Math we are completing our first chapter and will begin chapter 2 next week on Patterning. On Friday, I will be giving the students a Challenge packet which cover the concepts that we discussed these last 2 weeks. I will be giving out these packets at the culmination of each chapter we cover in Math. We do this in class, and I put up privacy folders so the students are unable to "share" their answers. I also give the directions one time and do not help the students as I would when we are covering the material initially. I think its beneficial to challenge my students and at the same time work on listening skills. Over the years, I find that students really "listen" when given directions one time. Try this at home some time when you need your child to do something for you. The challenge packets will be sent home, so please take time to review it with your child. Also, do not become "alarmed" if your child does not get 100% on it. Remember~its a challenge and a few of the concepts are a little harder for some students to grasp.

In Religion we met our "Faith First friends". They are 6 characters that will be in our many stories we listen to in our Religion series. The students all came home with the cut outs of the characters today. They can keep these at home.

Tomorrow, Wednesday is Picture day. As stated in my newsletter, it is a dress up day. Friday is class picture day so no gym uniforms are to be worn.

Thank you for helping your child with the class poem activity paper yesterday. Please send in your child's binder when possible. I would appreciate it if you would have their name in the upper right hand corner.

There are still students coming to school without a snack and/or rest towel. All students need these EVERY day.

I am quite pleased with the way the students are arriving to school each day. We are all coming in on our own, hanging up our backpacks, and remembering to hand in our folder. The students feel so proud of themselves when they are able to be independent. Ask your child each week what his/her job is. They love their class room jobs!!

Enjoy the remainder of the week!

September 20-23rd, 2011

Hi Parents,
Today was our 15th day of school and overall we are doing well, have learned our class routine, and are doing our weekly jobs. Unfortunately there are a few students who are having difficulty following directions, and listening. . Every Friday the students who have stayed on the green all week get to choose from either my candy jar or sticker treasure chest. I also plan on
rewarding those students who stay on the green all month with an extra special treat. Please continue to remind your child of proper classroom behavior.

The rest of the week:

Tuesday: Happy Birthday Jimmy! We all enjoyed cupcakes and a sucker from Jimmy.
In Reading we are completing letter book O and began our chapter on Patterns yesterday in Math. We made patterns out of cubes today, but will be making edible patterns later this week.

I have been assigning color word worksheets as part of our morning work. Today in your child's folder I put a laminated crayon of color words. Please have your child practicing reading these with you. Next week I will be testing each student on their color words. The students who are able to read the entire list without assistance will receive an award.

Wednesday: Computers
Small o printing paper will be assigned for homework.

Thursday: Library~please return your library book!
All school mass @ 8:30.

Friday: Happy 1st day of Fall!
Gym
To reinforce the concept of patterning, we will be making Fruit Loop necklaces for an art activity.
Homecoming pep rally in gym @ 1:30. All cheerleaders are to wear their cheer leading uniforms.

Next week:
Letter Book Gg
Apple unit
Special treat for all students who "stay on the green".

Enjoy these last 2 days of the Summer season (how sad!)

September 27-30, 2011

Hi Parents,
Its been a busy week and its only Tuesday. We are doing a lot in Kindergarten this week!
Here is what we have been doing and what's to come:

I started my star-of-the-week/Baby Duck activity yesterday. Baby Duck is now 7 years old and is a favorite classroom memory of many of my former students. Tricia was chosen this week and I heard that her sister Maggie ( who was one of my students a few years ago,) was quite happy to have Baby Duck visiting her home again. Have fun Tricia!

We began letter book Gg yesterday. As stated in my newsletter, we learn only the "hard" g sound this year. We worked on printing G in our books today and will work on g tomorrow. The picture paper was assigned for homework today. It is due tomorrow.

We are learning lots about apples this week: Yesterday we listened to a story about Johnny Appleseed since it was his birthday. We colored and cut out a stand up picture of Johnny.
Today we had an apple tasting of 3 apples: Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and Granny Smith. As a follow up Math activity, I had the students choose their favorite apple and we graphed our results. Once again the Granny Smith apple won by an overwhelming 12 votes! In all my 12 years at St. Linus, Granny Smith has always been the class favorite!

This afternoon, we did a Science Experiment and began working in our Science journals. We all "predicted" what would happen when you squeeze lemon juice on our 3 apples. Will the lemon juice keep the apples from turning brown? That is what we will find out tomorrow when we will "observe" the results. I hope to do more science experiments throughout the year.

Yesterday during our Religion class, we listened to a story about our 5 senses that God has given us. I decided to further the discussion by reading a book about each one of our senses. I read the book on our sense of sight and we were quite interested in learning about the pupil and the iris.

Wednesday: Twin day/Computer class

Thursday: Crazy sock day/Library

Friday: Dress in blue day/Gym
Ladies Guild hot lunch
*****Special treat given to all students who have stayed on the green light for the entire month of September! As stated in my last blog, I give out a small reward weekly for those who remain on the green light, but will have a bigger award at the end of each month for those who have earned it. It pays to...stay on the green light!! Please encourage your child to follow our class agreement.(It was sent home in my opening letter.) We have been in school 20 days today, so all students are quite aware of our class routine, and know what is expected of them in the classroom, during our Specials, and at wash room time. Unfortunately, there are consequences for those who make other choices. I have had to move clothespins to the yellow several times already and it disappoints me. To reinforce what I expect in class, I feel it is important to have consequences at home when your child gets their clothespin on the yellow. As a mother I know it breaks your heart to see your child upset, but in the long run it is in your child's best interest if you follow through, and not "give in". Thank you very much for your cooperation, it is greatly appreciated:)

I have tested the students on the color words and will let you know the results in the Progress report that will be coming home on Friday. I will also have a small comment on how your child is adjusting to Kindergarten. For the most part, we are doing pretty well.

Just a suggestion... let your child go grocery shopping with you this weekend and check out the apples. Ask your child if he/she can name the 5 parts of an apple.

Have a good rest of the week, hope the sun comes back out soon!
