Hi Families,
Happy New Year! Hope you all enjoyed Christmas. It was a nice, relaxing break.

Congratulations Mikey for being our next star-of-week! Its Baby Duck's second visit to the Horan house. Baby Duck was there 6 years ago when Mikey's brother, John was in Kindergarten. Baby Duck was only a year old. Have fun :)

We began letter book Ff yesterday. The picture paper was assigned today, and the printing pages will be assigned tomorrow, and Thursday.

There is no story in this letter book, so please have your child review the word list that was sent home. Some day next week I may be giving another spelling test.

We began our new chapter in Math yesterday. This chapter focuses on counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's. Today we counted by 10's and used Fruit Loop cereal to help us identify and count the numbers. When we were finished, we enjoyed a little treat:).

A Family Snowman activity went home yesterday. I was asked if you have to disguise the snowman, No! That was only for the turkey activity. Just dress up the snowman any way you wish.

Friday is the end of the 2nd quarter. This week and next, I will be testing each of the students on printing, number/letter recognition, and reading various words. Please review these concepts with your child. Report cards will be distributed soon.

This Sunday at the 10:30 mass we will be celebrating our Blue ribbon status with Cardinal George. If you plan on having your child attend, please have him/her dressed in their school uniform and sit with our class in our designated spot we sit for all school masses. I will be there, so look for me.

No school next Monday, January 16th in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Tomorrow and Thursday we will be reading our Scholastic news magazine about him and will discuss how we can solve problems peacefully, and how we should pay attention to who people are on the inside instead of on the outside.

Have a good rest of the week and enjoy our last day of Spring weather tomorrow. Snow is coming!

Take care,
Mrs. Revis

      Hi Parents,
Hope you are all having a good week. I was not in school today because I was attending a workshop. It was very worthwhile.

Markie is our star-of-the-week and I'm sure is enjoying his visit with Baby Duck. Its Baby Duck's second visit to the Wantuck home. Markie's sister, Rosie was one of my students-4 years ago! My, how time flies!

We had our first "rocking chair reader" come and read to the class yesterday. Michael Lundy's grandma came and read a very cute Christmas story to the class. She also brought them each a candy cane. How nice! If any one else is interested in having a grandparent read to the class, please let me know, I would prefer after the holidays-next week is a busy week.

Due to the short week we have next week, there will be no star-of-the-week. Baby Duck is going to visit her relatives. (Ha ha).

We will be finishing up letter book Ii this week. Tomorrow I will be introducing i as a middle sound. I will also be doing another Math "challenge packet". I always find these to be quite interesting. Its good to be challenged!

We began a new chapter in Math yesterday. We identified 4 new shapes: sphere, cube, cylinder, and cone. After Christmas I will introduce fractions.

As of Thursday, there will be 10 more days until Christmas. (Its hard to believe!) Your child will be coming home with a countdown chain. Please remind your child to remove a link each day. When only the star that is attached to it remains, Christmas day will be here. By doing this little activity, your child won't have to ask you how many days until Christmas:)

Friday is the Ladies Guild hot lunch. Rest towels will be coming home and staying home. Please have your child bring it back in January.

Any questions with the Christmas program letter I sent home, please let me know.

Well, enjoy this "balmy" weather. Make the most of this holiday season, and enjoy it with your child. Christmas is always so much fun when they are little. (I do know that!) I miss those days.

Take care,
Mrs. Revis

      Hi Parents,
Its certainly the Christmas season! We are enjoying Circle time each morning opening up the Advent calendars window, practicing our song for the Christmas program, and doing a variety of Christmas art activities.

Here is our week:
Yesterday we had a wonderful time on our field trip to the Beverly Art Center. The performance was enjoyable and the students were very well behaved. A big pat on the back to all them!

Sofia is our star-of-the-week. Have fun Sofia!

We began letter book Ii today. As stated in my newsletter, we learn only the short i sound in Kindergarten. (as in igloo). A new word list also went home with new/review words.

We had a visit today from St. Nick and received a couple of candy treats. I also had the students color a picture of St. Nick and since they all colored their pictures so nicely, I had them laminated. The students were encouraged to hang the picture in their bedroom.

The Ii printing papers will be assigned tomorrow and Thursday for homework.

I am very pleased with how well the Biography program is going. Thank you for your cooperation. The students seem to enjoy choosing their book each week. Next week will be the last week, and I will resume sending them home in January.

We did another Science experiment today. This time with a lima bean. We wrote in our Science journals and predicted how long it will take for our bean to sprout.

Thursday we will be going to church @ 9:00 for an all school mass. Its a holy day since its the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

On Friday the NJHS is having a bake sale. All bakery items will be 50 cents. Please send in money with your child if you want him/her to purchase something. No more than $1.00 please.

I will be sending home a letter by Friday regarding the Christmas program.

Hope you are enjoying the Christmas season. Have a good week.

Stay warm,
Mrs. Revis

      Hi Families,
Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoyed the many art activities your child brought home. The Thanksgiving recipes were quite amusing this year! The responses are always so amusing.
Our week:

Charlotte is our star of the week! Have fun Charlotte with Baby Duck.
We are finishing up letter book Ll. The printing papers are assigned tonight and tomorrow for homework.

In Math we have started our chapter on numbers 11-30. Please continue to have your child practice printing numbers 1-30. I still see many reversals of a few of the numbers.

In Religion we began discussing the meaning of Advent and what the Advent wreath means. We will be making our own Advent wreaths for an art activity on Friday. I would encourage you to attend mass on Sundays and point out the Advent wreath to your child.

I have purchased 2 Advent calendars and during Circle time I will be choosing 2 students per day to open a window. One of the calendars has chocolate behind each of the windows:)

I will be giving a SMALL spelling test on Thursday. This is just a review of our letters and a way for me to see how well the students can sound out and spell some of the words from our word lists. I have had 2 parents contact me and ask what words their child should practice. I usually don't know what words I will be giving until the day of the test. I will only take words from our word lists. If I give out the words I will be testing on ahead of time, the children will have those memorized. Please parents-this is not a big deal!

A little progress report will be coming home on Friday along with the results of your child's spelling test.

The all school Christmas program is on December 20th @ 7:00 in the church. I will be sending home a letter some time next week with more details.

There are still students in need of the following items: a new pencil case, crayons, dish towel for snack/lunch, and a rest towel. Please see to it that your child has these supplies. Thank you!

Hope you are having a good week. Stay warm!

      Hi Parents,
Thanksgiving is already next week. Wow, where has the time gone? Speaking of Thanksgiving, the turkeys in disguise look wonderful! I will try and post some pictures so you can see how great they all look. Thank you for your cooperation with this fun activity.

Several students already read their biography and completed their worksheet. As stated in my newsletter, your child has until Friday to hand theirs in. This activity is a fun little way to introduce your child to many historic people. Have fun with it. Just so you know, since next week is a shortened week, I will not be sending home any biographies. I will resume after our Thanksgiving break.

Rudy is our star-of-the-week. Have fun with Baby Duck Rudy:)

Congratulations Karol! He is the proud big brother of his new baby brother, Anthony.

Ice cream will be sold at lunch tomorrow (Wednesday) for $1.00.

Today in our letter books we did our first page in which we had to sound out and spell two of our words. As you review the word lists with your child, have your child sound out a word after you say it, and have him/her write it out on an index card. Just a suggestion...have your child keep their own set of index cards with their words written on each one. As the year progresses, and we learn more words, I will be giving little, (about 5 words) spelling tests to the students. This not only helps them with their printing, but they are also introduced to spelling tests which they will have in 1st grade.

I am quite pleased with how well the class has done with their printing of numbers 1-10. We will be completing this chapter this week and next week I will continue with the chapter on numbers 11-30.

Friday is the Ladies Guild hot lunch.

I will not be having a star-of-the-week next week since there are only 31/2 days of school. Baby Duck will be home with me!

Once again, thank you again for all your cooperation with the activities I have assigned. I also appreciate all the glue sticks that have been sent in.

Have a good week.

      Hi Parents,
Hope you all enjoyed that extra hour of sleep this weekend. It was nice!
Here's our week:

Today: Congratulations! Nora is our star-of-the-week. This is Baby Duck's first visit to the Murray home. I'm sure she'll have fun with Nora's family. Thank you to all of you who have had their visit with Baby Duck. You have taken such good card of her and all the other contents in the bag.

We began letter book Ss. A new word list also came home.

A family project has been assigned! A picture of a turkey came home in your child's folder. Please be creative and decorate your turkey. These are to be turned in by next Monday, Nov. 14th. Let the whole family get involved. Feel free to mount the turkey on poster board.

All permission slips f or our field trip were due back. If you have not done so, please have your child bring theirs in. The sooner we get our money in, the better our seats will be.

Tuesday: Ss picture paper for homework.

Our class will be attending the book fair from 1:20-1:40. Feel free to come and help your child with their purchase. Meet us at the classroom and you can walk down with us. If you are unable to come, put your child's money in an envelope with their name and "book money" on it.

Wednesday: We are discussing our families in Religion. Please have your child bring in a picture of their family. I would like to display these in the hall. Thank you.

Thursday: Veterans Assembly @ 9:15 in church. If you have not attended this assembly before, you should make an effort to. Its very meaningful.

Early dismissal @ 11:30. As always, I will be walking the students out @ 11:25. There will be no pm extended day.

Parent teacher conferences: Open conferences from 12:00-3:30 or 4:30-6:00. Scheduled conferences are from 6:00-8:00. * If you have a conference scheduled with another teacher for one of your other children, please let me know as soon as possible and I will try to schedule your time close to the time for your other child.

Friday: No school :)

Thank you to all of you who sent in glue sticks. We are set for awhile! No need for anyone to send more in.

Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday.

Have a good week,

      Hi Parents,
Happy November! Wow~where did October go?

Our Halloween party went very well yesterday. Thanks to Mrs. Lundy and all the other moms who helped out. The students all seemed to have had a great time. They were all well behaved. Their costumes were great too!

Jimmy is our star-of-the-week. This is Baby Duck's second visit to the Lyon's home. Jimmy's sister Morgan was one of my students a few years ago. I'm sure Baby Duck will have a lot of fun. I believe she wore a Halloween costume and even went trick-or-treating!!

We went to mass today and were very well behaved. I have noticed an increase in our participation and singing during the mass. Very nice.

I had mentioned in my newsletter that a field trip permission slip was to come home today. I was unable to complete it. I will send it home hopefully this Friday.

We are completing our Dd letter book, and are discussing dogs tomorrow. Have your child bring in either a stuffed dog, or a picture of one.

Thank you to all of you who had your child bring in a bible last week. It was an added bonus to our discussion of the bible.

Erin will be celebrating her birthday tomorrow. Happy Birthday Erin!

I sent home a note today regarding glue sticks. I can't believe we have just about gone through our entire supply. If any one could send some in, I would greatly appreciate it.

Tomorrow I will be reading/discussing the story of Noah's Ark. I was also able to obtain a childrens version of the story on VHS. The students in the past have always enjoyed watching this.

Report cards will be coming home on Friday. Also included in the envelope is the letter/number printing test I gave each child. Please review this, and have your child practice their printing if necessary. I have printing paper, so let me know if you need me to send some home in your child's folder.

Yesterday I sent home a letter regarding our "Rocking chair reading program". Please encourage grandmas/grandpas in your family to come visit and read a story or two to the class. I have plenty of books to choose from, and a nice rocking chair to sit in. Let me know if you have someone who would be interested. I will be doing this program throughout the entire year so no hurry. (Just a thought... you may want to wait for the room to cool down, its been quite warm lately.)

Our behavior seems to be improving. I hope this continues:)

Have a good week.

      Hi Parents,
Hope you had the opportunity to get out and enjoy this beautiful fall weather these past few days. Too bad it won't last for long. It would be ideal trick-or-treat weather!!!

Our week:
Congratulations to Erin, she is this week's star-of-the-week! Baby Duck visited her home 4 years ago when I taught her sister Paulene. Have fun Pascua family!

Thank you to Nora's family for our snack.

This is Red Ribbon week. This week focuses on being drug free. I discussed with the class today that only our mom, dad, or the doctor can give us medicine. I also explained that if they see medication in the cabinet or on the kitchen counter, they are not to touch it. I kept our discussion very simple. We also discussed that when we take vitamins that mom gives us, we cannot take more than what is given to us.
In addition, all girls can polish one of their nails red on Wednesday. On Friday, the students are to wear red to school. Jeans are ok too.

In Reading we began letter book Dd. The picture paper will be assigned tomorrow for homework.
When reviewing the D sound with your child, please remember that we don't say "duh".
Our first word list went home today. From now on, a word list will be coming home with each new letter book. Please have your child sound out each letter, and blend the sounds together. Please refrain from having your child memorize the words.

We are finishing up our chapter on numbers 1-5 in Math. Next week we will begin 6-10.

Tomorrow I will be carving a pumpkin with the class. We will be learning the 5 parts of a pumpkin and will complete our pumpkin booklet.

Report card will be coming home next week. In order for me to complete these properly, I will be individually testing the students on the various concepts we have learned this quarter.
I will also be giving a letter and number printing test on the letters and numbers we have covered. Have your child practice printing their letters/numbers at home.

I have noticed that many of the students receive milk at lunch time. The majority of the students who receive milk are NOT drinking it. Each day I come back from lunch and see almost full milk cartons sitting on the extra table waiting to be dumped out. I encourage the students daily to drink their milk and also tell them that they can take their time drinking it and do not have to be finished when I return from lunch. If your child tells you that he/ she doesn't have enough time to drink it, well that is not true, they all have PLENTY of time. You would all be shocked to see what is wasted. Also, please double check with your child when ordering the hot lunches. Once again, a lot of the hot lunches get dumped out. Send it a water bottle and make their lunch. You'll be saving money!

Just a reminder: please do a daily check of your child's folder. I have seen a few folders come back with the previous days papers still in them. This tells me that the folder was never checked. I would appreciate it.

Well the end of the 1st quarter is this Friday. Overall the class is doing well. I am pleased with the printing and we all seem to be learning our letter sounds.

Have a good week.

Mrs. Revis

      Hi Parents,
Hope you are having a good week. Here is our week in Kindergarten:

Michael Lundy is our Star-of-the-Week! Baby Duck has had several visits over the years at the Lundy home. I'm sure she is happy to be back. Have fun, Michael :)

Rudy is celebrating his birthday tomorrow. Happy Birthday Rudy!!

We are completing letter book Aa. Tomorrow we will be discussing a as a middle sound. (dad, man, pan, etc.)
During our Circle time last week, I introduced blending of two letter sounds. Next week we will begin letter book Dd. As I mentioned in my newsletter, a word list will be coming home on Monday. Please do not have your child memorize the words. The list will consist of real words and nonsense words. I encourage you to have your child spell out each word, sound out each letter, and then blend those letter sounds together. Remember, your child is not expected to read the entire list at once. Have him/her just read a few per night.

In Math we are learning our number poem. We have learned the poem for numbers 1-5. This poem really helps out with the formation of each number. A number printing paper will be assigned next week for homework. Please encourage your child to recite the poem as he/she is printing the numbers.

Today we did a Science experiment and "predicted" and "observed" what would happen when we put various fruits/vegetables in water. Would they sink or float? We then recorded/illustrated the results in our Science journals.
The remainder of the week will be spent discussing the parts of a pumpkin, and how it grows. I will be bringing in a pumpkin on Friday and will carve it with the class.

Just a reminder: Ice cream will be sold at lunch tomorrow. Please have your child bring $1.00 in an envelope with their name on it.

A letter went home yesterday regarding Halloween. The class party will be on Halloween from 10:30-11:30. If you would be interested in helping out, please contact Mrs. Lundy (Michael's mom.)

I would appreciate it if all the students would have a snack towel and rest towel. There are still students forgetting to bring one or both of those items to school.

Fall weather has arrived! Keep warm!

      Hi Parents,

Another gorgeous day! The class room has been quite warm (what else is new,) but that's ok, I'll take these warm temperatures any day. Today I took the class out for a leaf walk. We estimated how many red, yellow, orange, and multicolored leaves we could see, and recorded our results in our activity booklet. We then collected various colors/shapes of leaves and went inside to do leaf rubbings. We will use our leaves tomorrow to do an art activity.

Today we went to our second all-school mass and were very well behaved. I was quite impressed.

In Reading we began letter book Aa. As stated in my newsletter, we learn the short a sound (ex:apple, alligator). The Aa picture paper will be assigned tomorrow for homework.

In Math we began chapter 3 on Numbers 0-5. This week concepts will focus on the terms:equal, more, and fewer. Next week we actually begin learning to print 0-5. I will be teaching the class a number poem that helps with the formation of each number when printing them. A 0-5 printing paper will be assigned for homework.

In Religion we discussed God's gift of animals. I told the class that they may bring in their favorite stuffed animal if they wish. Any day this week is fine with me.

Thank you to the Bittners for this week's snack.

Keira is our star-of-the-week. Have fun with Baby Duck! Ronan was our star last week and Baby Duck enjoyed her visit there. This was Baby Duck's second visit. Her last visit was 2 years ago when Ronan's brother, Kian was in my class. I know its always so much fun for my former students when Baby Duck comes back to visit.

*Please ask your child if he/she is in need of new crayons. Several students are missing or have broken many of their crayons.

Yea! Every one stayed on the "green" today!! Hopefully we have a whole week of green lights. Unfortunately since I started moving clothespins, we have not had a complete week of green lights:( I told the class today that if everyone stayed on the green today, then we could do it EVERYDAY! Please continue to encourage your child to stay off the yellow, and stay on the green.

Last week I began teaching the class the Hail Mary. Just a suggestion~say the prayer with your child as part of their night time prayers. In November I will be teaching the Our Father.

Since we have learned 4 letter sounds, please make it a point to review these sounds as often as possible with your child. I am starting to begin blending of the letter sounds. When your child is able to blend 2-3 sounds together successfully, he/she is on their way to reading. As an example:
oc, og, ga, ca. When we begin letter book Dd in 2 weeks, I will be sending home a word list for you to review. You will have a better idea on what to go over with your child.

On Friday, for our morning work, we will start journal writing. I will be doing this every Friday. From now until January, I will tell the class what to write, and illustrate, and come January, they will each come up with their own journal entry and illustration. At the end of the year, these journals will be coming home. It always amazes me each year when I see the progression the students make in their writing from when they begin their journals in October, to when they complete them in May. During Parent-teacher conferences, I will let you take a peek at your child's journal. They make a great Kindergarten memory some day!

A letter will be coming home next week regarding our Halloween party/costumes.

Hope you are having a nice week.

Mrs. Revis

      Hi Parents,
Its been a busy week and its only Tuesday. We are doing a lot in Kindergarten this week!
Here is what we have been doing and what's to come:

I started my star-of-the-week/Baby Duck activity yesterday. Baby Duck is now 7 years old and is a favorite classroom memory of many of my former students. Tricia was chosen this week and I heard that her sister Maggie ( who was one of my students a few years ago,) was quite happy to have Baby Duck visiting her home again. Have fun Tricia!

We began letter book Gg yesterday. As stated in my newsletter, we learn only the "hard" g sound this year. We worked on printing G in our books today and will work on g tomorrow. The picture paper was assigned for homework today. It is due tomorrow.

We are learning lots about apples this week: Yesterday we listened to a story about Johnny Appleseed since it was his birthday. We colored and cut out a stand up picture of Johnny.
Today we had an apple tasting of 3 apples: Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and Granny Smith. As a follow up Math activity, I had the students choose their favorite apple and we graphed our results. Once again the Granny Smith apple won by an overwhelming 12 votes! In all my 12 years at St. Linus, Granny Smith has always been the class favorite!

This afternoon, we did a Science Experiment and began working in our Science journals. We all "predicted" what would happen when you squeeze lemon juice on our 3 apples. Will the lemon juice keep the apples from turning brown? That is what we will find out tomorrow when we will "observe" the results. I hope to do more science experiments throughout the year.

Yesterday during our Religion class, we listened to a story about our 5 senses that God has given us. I decided to further the discussion by reading a book about each one of our senses. I read the book on our sense of sight and we were quite interested in learning about the pupil and the iris.

Wednesday: Twin day/Computer class

Thursday: Crazy sock day/Library

Friday: Dress in blue day/Gym
           Ladies Guild hot lunch
*****Special treat given to all students who have stayed on the green light for the entire month of September! As stated in my last blog, I give out a small reward weekly for those who remain on the green light, but will have a bigger award at the end of each month for those who have earned it. It pays to...stay on the green light!! Please encourage your child to follow our class agreement.(It was sent home in my opening letter.) We have been in school 20 days today, so all students are quite aware of our class routine, and know what is expected of them in the classroom, during our Specials, and at wash room time. Unfortunately, there are consequences for those who make other choices. I have had to move clothespins to the yellow several times already and it disappoints me. To reinforce what I expect in class, I feel it is important to have consequences at home when your child gets their clothespin on the yellow. As a mother I know it breaks your heart to see your child upset, but in the long run it is in your child's best interest if you follow through, and not "give in". Thank you very much for your cooperation, it is greatly appreciated:)

I have tested the students on the color words and will let you know the results in the Progress report that will be coming home on Friday. I will also have a small comment on how your child is adjusting to Kindergarten. For the most part, we are doing pretty well.

Just a suggestion... let your child go grocery shopping with you this weekend and check out the apples. Ask your child if he/she can name the 5 parts of an apple.

Have a good rest of the week, hope the sun comes back out soon!
Mrs. Revis
